Here is a magnificent Coast Redwood that was collected.  It has adjusted exceptionally well to the potted culture of bonsai and is awe inspiring to see in person.  The Redwoods are the tallest trees and amoung the oldest on earth, passing 2,000 years and 360 feet in height.  They once populated almost every region on earth, but now have retreated in their native habit to a small strip along the Northern coast of California.  The Redwood can survive in most every location, but needs protection from freezing and extended periods over 100 degrees.  Water and soil are most important in their well being as a bonsai subject.  This bonsai is massive with a large hollow part of the main trunk at the base.  The trunk at the base is 6" in diameter.  The top part of the trunk has a large natural shari, which you can see better in the last photo.  This old speciman bonsai is 14" tall and  16" wide and planted in a 10" rectangular unglazed ceramic Japanese bonsai pot.  Repotted September, 2007 using 2/3 akadama and 1/3 kanuma.  You can tell it is very old by the deadwood and deep fisured bark.
