Here is a magnificent Coast Redwood that was collected and potted to establish a good root system.  Most branches were removed so that smaller new growth could begin for selection and placement.  After this process I repotted it recently.  This time I used akadama to assure its health and well being.   It has adjusted exceptionally well to the potted culture of bonsai and is awe inspiring to see in person.  It is hard to estimate its age, but much older than any of us.  You can not really get an idea of its size or
details from photos. The Redwoods are the tallest trees and amoung the oldest on earth, passing 2,000 years and 360 feet in height.  They once populated almost every region on earth, but now have retreated in their native habit to a small strip along the Northern coast of California.  The Redwood can survive in most every location, but needs protection from freezing and extended periods over 100 degrees.  Water and soil are most important in their well being as a bonsai subject.  This bonsai actually has two trunks and one looks like it was damaged a long time ago as you can see in the closeup photo.  The massive main trunk at the base is over 7" .  The tree is jinned at the top and toward the bottom where a large branch is missing.   It also lost part of the main trunk many years ago and is hollowed out from age.  The bonsai is 12" tall and 10" wide and planted in a 12" oval Korean bonsai pot.
